Addressing Conflict

There are a number of ways that can be utilized to address workplace conflict:

Avoidance: ‘hiding our head in the sand’, hoping the conflict will go away.

Collaboration: working together to find a mutually beneficial solution.

Benefits…….Collaboration leads to creative problem-solving a

Disadvantages……take the most time compared to other conflict resolution styles

Compromise: finding the middle ground

Compromise is typically not the ideal process for resolving disputes.

Compromise can be an effective and appropriate method when other approaches are not.

Competing: ‘may the best person win’.

The competing style can be ok:  when the goal is quick action.

Disadvantage of the competing style: it may cause the other side not to voice important concerns.

Accommodation: surrendering our own needs and wishes.

The accommodating style:  one of sacrifice, low assertiveness.
